Newcomers make All Africa Games success

Republic of the Congo celebrate qualifying for the men's final
Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, September 15, 2015 - Newcomers in the men's and women's volleyball events at the All Africa Games contributed to the success of the 12-day competition held in Brazzaville from September 2-14.

In the men's competition, host team Republic of the Congo were the biggest surprises as they defeated giants Egypt in the semifinal to qualify for their first ever final. In the last match of the competition, the hosts claimed silver and their best ever result in the history of the competition, losing to Algeria. Fighting spirit and a high level of technique were on display throughout the tournament. 

Rwanda were also in spectacular form, qualifying for the final four after defeating Cameroon. Other teams making standout contributions to the competition included Ghana, Nigeria, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Botswana.

In the women's championship, all eyes were on the Seychelles, who claimed a spot in the semifinals. Botswana demonstrated how the country has progressed and Cape Verde's level of play also impressed.

Kenya's performance throughout was consistent, earning the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup participants gold with a great victory against an experienced Cameroon team.
